Home HiFi, Studio & Car HiFi
Depending on the design, Mundorf AMTs can be used in home HiFi as well as in studio or car HiFi applications. This ranges from the smallest U40W as a high-resolution component in a 3-way combination up to the AMT29 as a high-output mid/high-frequency driver that is also suitable for PA use. Decisive for the selection are the installation situation, the desired dispersion behavior, the usable frequency range including the crossover frequency, and the intended target level.
The vertical dispersion behavior is essentially determined by the height of the diaphragm: the taller the diaphragm, the more strongly the AMT focuses vertically. The first number in the article designation is a guide to the diaphragm height; in the U series, the height in millimeters was adopted directly into the article designation.
The width of the diaphragm is decisive for the horizontal dispersion behavior: the wider the diaphragm, the more pronounced the directivity in the horizontal plane.
By selecting the diaphragm height and width appropriate to the application, the desired dispersion behavior can be set very precisely.
As a general rule: stronger focusing reduces unwanted room reflections from the ceiling, the floor and – depending on placement – also from side walls. As a result, more direct sound reaches the listener, fine details are conveyed more immediately, and a vivid stage image is supported.
The flip side: the stronger the focusing, the more likely a narrower optimal listening zone ("sweet spot") becomes, outside of which the treble level can – depending on room and placement – drop off more quickly in extreme cases.
With closed AMTs, this behavior can be specifically influenced and adjusted through design measures – in particular through the appropriate choice of diaphragm height. In high-end systems, D’Appolito arrangements as well as very tall AMT lines can also be integrated.
Dipole designs take an entirely different approach.
This approach does not attempt to exclude room influences, for example in the form of reflections, from the sound. Rather, the room is deliberately included in the reproduction – with the aim of the loudspeaker integrating more strongly “into the room” acoustically and the sound image detaching freely – the music “fills the room".
The diaphragm area determines the maximum possible sound pressure. Due to the folding of the diaphragm, the actually effective diaphragm area is again considerably larger than the area of the sound outlet.
This enables the AMT’s extremely effortless performance at high levels compared with other transducers such as domes, ribbons and magnetostats. The prerequisite for this, however – especially at lower frequencies – is our uniquely damped diaphragm technology from our own development and production in combination with the extremely strong neodymium N50 magnet drive we use. The result of the large diaphragm area, unique diaphragm quality and the elaborate magnet system is high sensitivity, minimal distortion below the threshold of perception, the reproduction of the finest dynamic transients and a uniquely powerful sound image across the entire reproduced frequency range.
The frequency response is shaped both by the diaphragm geometry and by the structure of the rear damping.
Another design feature that is important in practice is the design of the mounting flange. There are particularly compact designs without a wide mounting flange, which are ideal for tight installation situations – especially in cars. At the same time, these variants can also open up interesting design options in the studio, pro or home HiFi sector. In addition, the familiar designs with a round front plate as well as with a rectangular mounting flange or a rectangular front plate are available.
For orientation
The U series is characterized by a very compact design and magnetically very neutral behavior towards the outside. It is ideal for use in cars, for high-end home audio and for studio applications. In its Pro variant, it is also used in beam systems.
The Concert series was developed especially for high-end HiFi applications. Here, too, there are variants for the pro audio sector.
The dipole variants are a special treat for fans of open-baffle and dipole concepts and open up extensive design possibilities.
