ECap for Car Radios – Mundorf HeadCaps

The Mundorf HeadCaps are storage capacitors for car radios that are connected directly at the unit, in parallel with the car radio’s power supply. In a vehicle, cable lengths, contact resistances and the on-board electrical system cause unavoidable voltage drops – especially when music playback demands high pulse currents. It is precisely these dips that are absorbed by the energy reservoir placed close to the load. As a result, the car radio receives a more stable supply, and music reproduction gains a solid foundation.

A central building block is the diode decoupling: it prevents parasitic discharge of the capacitor. The stored energy thus remains available in the system and can act precisely where it is needed – directly at the car radio, exactly at load peaks.

Technical Properties

Electrical Properties

Parallel energy reservoir directly at the load

The energy required for load peaks is provided by the buffer reservoir immediately at the car radio instead of first being “passed along” over long cable runs. This reduces supply dips and stabilizes the unit’s operating conditions.

Diode decoupling against parasitic discharge

Prevents back-discharge into the vehicle’s electrical system and keeps the reserve stably available.

Internal construction for fast current delivery

The electrolytic capacitors used are designed for fast energy delivery – with a special electrolyte, laser-welded terminals and optimized contacting for low losses and high peak-current capability.

Easy integration

The installation is designed for straightforward retrofitting, among other things thanks to matching ISO connectors. An OBD- & on-board-computer-compatible variant PCC68i is also available.

Macro-Microphonics

Vibrations and shocks act on components in a vehicle. A robust design and secure mounting ensure that the energy reservoir remains mechanically quiet and delivers its buffering effect consistently even while driving.

Micro-Microphonics

Since the HeadCap operates directly at the load, a quiet current path matters. The stable internal contacting and the high-performance electrolyte system support even energy delivery during fast load changes – without fine, disturbing supply modulations.

Sonic Character

With HeadCaps, playback becomes more composed and controlled, because the car radio comes under less supply stress during bass impulses and at high levels. The sound picture appears more powerful, yet at the same time more finely resolved and altogether more stable – because the supply holds up even when the music briefly demands high energy.

Typical Applications

  • Stabilizing music playback by buffering load peaks directly at the car radio
  • Plug & play installation thanks to ISO connectors
  • OBD- & on-board-computer-compatible variant PCC68i available
  • Excellently suited for plug & play ISO amplifiers
  • Relieves and protects battery and alternator
  • Follow-me-home music (the car radio continuing to play, depending on system design)
