P-Core
For coils used in bass and fundamental frequency branches, it is not only the inductance value that matters, but above all how they behave under real musical load. The P-core is designed for maximum headroom: Thanks to its magnetically open structure, it saturates very late and in a smooth manner. This means that the inductance remains stable even during strong current pulses, and the filtering effect does not abruptly change under load.
Especially at high volume levels, this reserve prevents early compression and audible harshness. The price of this reserve is copper: more turns are required to achieve the same inductance, which typically results in a higher RDC compared to an H-core. In practice, this is a deliberate trade-off when current handling capacity is more important than the absolute lowest resistance.
As a result, the sound remains composed and controlled even with demanding bass signals, without any strain in the soundstage. P-core coils are therefore particularly well-suited for applications with high-level requirements or a wide dynamic range.
Even when a coil is used in parallel branches or correction circuits, saturation and core-related effects can directly impact the speaker—the P-core’s high headroom is therefore immediately relevant to sound quality. Depending on the core material (ferrite or Aronite), the focus shifts: ferrite offers greater precision with small signals, while Aronite provides maximum current handling capability.
In short: The P-core is the design that ensures maximum stability under load.
• Maximally open magnetic circuit → very late, smooth saturation
• High current and dynamic headroom, stable under load
• Requires more copper → typically higher RDC than H-core
• Particularly powerful for bass/fundamental frequency and high-level requirements
• Available in combination with ferrite or Aronite (depending on the goal: precision vs. headroom)
